‘Sheikh Hasina was arrested for protesting irregularities’

‘Sheikh Hasina was arrested for protesting irregularities’

Information Minister and Awami League joint general secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud said that Awami League President Sheikh Hasina was arrested on July 16, 2007, for protesting against various irregularities of the caretaker government. By arresting Sheikh Hasina, democracy was in fact captured that day. That is why July 16 is not only the day of imprisonment of Sheikh Hasina but also the day of imprisonment of democracy.

He said this while exchanging views with journalists on the occasion of Sheikh Hasina's 'Imprisonment Day' at the meeting room of the Information Ministry at the Secretariat on Thursday noon.

The Information Minister said that Sheikh Hasina was arrested on that day to silence the voice against injustice and to capture democracy.

Hasan Mahmud said those who were in power that day were forced to realize that the imprisoned Sheikh Hasina was much stronger than the freed Sheikh Hasina. The people of Bangladesh formed a resistance that day and in the face of that protest-resistance, they were forced to release Sheikh Hasina. Democracy was liberated on that day with the release of Sheikh Hasina.

He said the people of Bangladesh had installed Sheikh Hasina as the Prime Minister in December 2008 through a landslide victory. In return for their love, Sheikh Hasina has been successfully leading Bangladesh for the last 11 and a half years. Under her leadership, it has evolved from a least developed country to a middle-income country. Bangladesh has transformed from a country of food shortage to a country of food surplus.

The joint general secretary of the Awami League said poverty has come down from 41 percent to 20 percent. Adding the economic growth of the last 11 and a half years under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina, the economic growth of Bangladesh is the highest in the world. Bangladesh and Bengalis have taken a dignified seat in front of the world under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina.
