COVID-19 kills 55 journalists globally: PEC

The novel coronavirus, which has taken the form of a global pandemic, has also affected the world media. The deadly virus kills at least 55 journalists around the world in the last two months while performing duties in the wake of COVID-19 outbreak, said the Press Emblem Campaign (PEC), an international organization working on media freedom.

The organization released the list of journalists killed by the virus from March 1 to May 1 on Friday, blamed for the lack of adequate protective equipment for the deaths. Besides, they also alleged the “excess control over media” during the COVID-19 period.

“More than 50 journalists from 23 countries have died from coronavirus in the past two months,” said the PEC, however, they could not confirm whether all the 55 journalists who lost their lives by the virus were affected while on duty.

Releasing the list on the occasion of World Media Freedom Day on May 3, the PEC warned that the journalists have sacrificed their lives to collect news in the time of global crisis. In addition, many others have been infected with COVID-19 disease.

“Journalists are at great risk during this health crisis because they have to continue their work by taking the interview of doctors, nurses, political leaders, experts, scientists and patients and collecting the information by going to the hospital,” the organization said.

“On the other hand, there are cases of censorship, internet shutdown, extrajudicial detention of journalists, physical and mental torture in this difficult time of coronavirus, which is a threat for the freedom of the press,” they also said.

They told that many more journalists around the world are under treatment by infecting from the COVID-19.
