A Dhaka University student has died after falling from a coconut tree at the Jagannath Hall on the first anniversary of a similar fatal fall on the campus. The latest incident occurred sometime after 10:30pm on Thursday, the hall’s Provost Mihir Lal Saha told.
The dead, Barun Biswas, was a second-year bachelor with honours student of applied mathematics from Barishal. Barun was taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital immediately after the fall but the doctors declared him dead, the provost said.

File Photo: Abdullah Al Momin Niloy Kumar Biswas, a student at the hall, said Barun climbed the tree next to October Smriti Bhaban of the hall to pick coconut. Barun had picked coconut from a tree along with his friends earlier in the afternoon, Proctor Golam Rabbani told bdnews24.com.
“Why did he have to pick coconut risking his life again in the night?†the proctor wondered.
On May 9 last year, Sheikh Omar Toufique, a first-year honours student of Urdu department, died after falling from a tree next to the university’s central mosque while picking mango.
