Construction work for Isolation Centre at ICCB going in full swing

The construction work of the country’s largest isolation centre for corona patients at the International Convention City Bashundhara (ICCB) in the capital is going in full swing.

The Convention City Authority and the Health Engineering Department (HED) are carrying out the construction work quickly to set up the 2,000-bed isolation centre, officials told reporters at the ICCB's Trade Center on Monday.

Md Moniruzzaman Mollah, superintending engineer of the HED, Md Masudul Alam, executive engineer of the HED, M M Jasim Uddin, Head of Operations of ICCB, and other officials were present.

Bashundhara Group has dedicated its ICCB to the noble cause of treating corona patients and saving many lives.

The ICCB will be used for the time being for the treatment of corona patents. After corona is over, the facility will go back to its original function housing exhibitions, trade shows and other programmes.

As the country’s largest business conglomerate, Bashundhara Group has stood by the government in the critical time of the corona pandemic.

Bashundhara Group Chairman Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan sent a letter to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina proposing to set up 5,000-bed hospital.

Later, Bashundhara Group Managing Director Sayem Sobhan Anvir tendered the proposal to Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister Dr Ahmed Kaikaus at the PMO. He also donated Tk 10 crore to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund.

Talking to journalists, Anvir said the countrymen have never experienced a terrible situation like this after the liberation war in 1971.

The process of making the isolation centre has started as the health ministry officials and armed forces visited the venue and expressed satisfaction with the facilities.

Initially, the ICCB is going to become a 2,000-bed isolation centre which may be further expanded to a 5,000-bed facility, if needed.

The convention centre will be the largest integrated treatment facility in the country for Covid-19 patients once the construction work is over.

Md Moniruzzaman Mollah said that a total of 2,000 isolation unit will be set up at the Expo Trade Center and three more convention halls. In the convention hall of 46,000 square feet, 71 intensive care unit (ICU) will be set up with approval from the Ministry of Health.

“Hopefully, we can start medical care here within 15 days. Some ICU some beds will have to import. Because of that it may be late. The number of toilets was low here. So that three blocks were made for toilet work is in progress,” he added.

He said, “As all the markets in Dhaka are closed. Shops are being opened with the help of army and police. Later, goods were brought here by police. All in all, we are working in an unfavorable environment. Otherwise, the progress of the work would have been even greater.”

M M Jasim Uddin said, “The construction of the hospital was going on for the fifth day at ICCB. We hope to be able to complete this task within 15 days. Otherwise it may take a couple more days. Because of the crisis for collecting and bringing construction materials is getting complicated.”

He said, “The ICCB's engineering department is also working in coordination with them. Hopefully, patients will begin to receive medical care from the last week of this month. The convention halls are ready. Just need to set up the bed. Trade center has completed 60 to 70 percent of the work required for the hospital.”

The initiative of Bashundhara Gorup to convert its trade centre and convention centers into hospital has been acclaimed at home and abroad as the company came up to render service to the humanity at this critical phase.

During conversation, diplomats of different foreign missions and UN agencies in Dhaka have highly appreciated the Bashundhara Gorup’s initiative in aid of the government.

They said this large hospital will definitely contribute greatly in treating coronavirus patients in Bangladesh.

United Arab Emirates (UAE)-based newspaper Khaleej Times has appreciated Bashundhara Group’s noble initiative to turn its business centre in Dhaka into a healthcare facility for corona patients.
