Bangladesh government has extended the ongoing countrywide shutdown for three more days to April 14 to curb the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

"An order has been isssued declaring April 12 and 13 as general holidays, to prevent the transmission of coronavirus or COVD-19," Public Administration secretary Sheikh Yusuf Harun told Jago News on Sunday. 

Apart from this, April 14, the first day of Bengali New Year, will be added with the holidays. 

The notification said kitchen markets, food shops, pharmacies, hospitals and all emergency services will remain exempted from the restrictions.

Drug industry, production and export-oriented indusstry can stay in operation, if necessary, said in the order.

Besides, transport including rickshaw-van, rail, bus, will be allowed ply gradually for the interest of people's livelihood. 

Bangladesh earlier went on a 10-day general holiday from March 26 to keep people at home with a view to stemming the virus. 

Later, the holiday or shutdown was extended for five days to April 9. April 10 and 11 fell on weekly holidays.   

As of Sunday 88 people contracted the novel coronavirus and among them nine died in the country. Thirty three people recovered from the epidemic.
