Ramazan (pseudonym), the third child of a daily wage worker father from a poor family, is studying in the second year of the Bengali department of Jagannath University. Since there is no hall, Ramzan has been living in a rented mess. Although he has completed a year of tuition, he has recently started to feel frustrated.

This student is in trouble due to the recent rise in prices of goods and the increase in mess rent. In the past, he managed to manage it with 8-9 thousand taka per month, but since last month, the total cost has increased by 2 thousand taka. Since he has no other option but three tuitions, he has taken loans to manage his expenses. Two months of rent is also due. Due to poverty, he could not pay the semester admission fee. He also cut down on his daily food. Ramzan is now worried about the rest of his education.

Ramzan said, "I could have managed with the tuition fee earlier. Now it is not possible. There is no way to get money from my family. I am looking for another tuition fee. I have also incurred some debts."

The same effect has been felt by all the students without halls at Jagannath University. The worst sufferers are the students from poor families living in the mess. Sakib Hossain, a student of the English department, said, 'Two months ago, I could eat for a whole month in my mess for 3,000 taka. Now it costs an additional 1,200 taka. The cost of the mess has increased by 1,000 taka compared to last month.

A third-year student of the Chemistry department is in the same situation. He continues to take tuitions like in Ramadan. This student said that the cost has increased a lot, but the tuition fee does not increase. If you insist too much, there will be no tuition. The cost is now almost double from the first year. Sometimes you have to take loans.

Costs have doubled in 10 years:
A student, Tausif Mahmud Sohan, said, "When I came to Dhaka 7 years ago, even if I played well, the meal rate in the mess was 35 to 37 taka. The cost was between 2300 and 2500 taka per month. Now the cost of food is 4500 to 500 taka.

Students have reduced their meals to meet expenses. Talking to students of Jagannath University, it was learnt that many students from poor families have reduced their breakfast to reduce expenses due to the increase in commodity prices.

A student of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism in the 2020-21 academic year said that he has been eating two meals a day since the price increase. This has been his habit for a long time. He skips breakfast and eats breakfast and lunch together. This student said that if he eats breakfast in the morning, at least it costs 35 to 40 taka. And if you eat at noon, it costs 50 to 60 taka. So you save the morning expenses and eat at noon.

Students say, "If the halls had been salvaged before the new campus work was completed, the students living in the mess would have at least been relieved from the mess expenses."

University Student Welfare Director Dr. K. A. M. Rifat Hasan said that the administration does not provide a subsidy to the canteen, but the canteen rent, gas, electricity, and these expenses do not have to be paid by the canteen. If the students submit a written application, the administration will recommend it and make arrangements. And the DC office is verifying the documents regarding the rescue of the hall."

University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Rezaul Karim said, "We are listening to the problems of the students. The main challenge of Jagannath University is to solve the housing problem. But it is not possible to solve all the problems suddenly. We will take some steps soon to eliminate the housing crisis.
