Awami League postpones programs with mass gatherings

Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has directed the ruling party top brass to postpone all kinds of programs with mass gatherings, including councils and public meetings, this winter due to the second wave of Covid-19.
 
Awami League Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim confirmed the matter to on Monday.

“Our leader directed us not to hold any crowded party programs this winter to tackle the second wave of Covid-19,” he said.

The postponement may extend until March or April, the Awami League joint general secretary added.

Party insiders said Sheikh Hasina is aware that the continuation of political programs while educational institutions closed to combat the pandemic was creating controversy.

“The message has already been sent to the leaders and activists concerned of AL across the country,” A top leader of Awami League told on condition of anonymity.

In response to a question on election campaigns for the ongoing municipal polls in the country, the party leader said: “The election schedule is given by the Election Commission. 

We cannot violate the instructions of Election Commission and that is why election campaigns are going on in the areas concerned, but Awami League as a party will not hold any mass gathering type programs until the end of winter.”
