The last and 41st span ‘2-F’ of the Padma Multi-Purpose Bridge has installed on Thursday morning on the pillars 12 and 13 at the Mawa-end in Munshiganj. With the installation of the 150 meters long span, a total of 6.15 km (6,150 meters) of the dream double-layer Padma Bridge has become visible.

The span left Mawa Construction Yard on Wednesday and reached the designated pillars in the afternoon, confirmed Dewan Abdul Quader, Executive Engineer and Project Manager (Main Bridge) of the Padma Bridge.

If all goes well, the Padma Bridge is scheduled to be inaugurated on Victory Day 2021. Along with buses and trucks, trains will also run on the Padma Bridge in a two-storey system.

According to economists, the opening of the Padma Bridge will change the capital’s communications with 21 districts in the south-west. This will have a positive impact on the overall economy of the country. This will increase the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 1 to 1.5%. The poverty rate will also be reduced as a result of various institutions including newly formed heavy industries.

Atiur Rahman, former governor of Bangladesh Bank, said if the Padma Bridge is built, not only the development of communication but also the economy of the country will change. “People’s confidence in trade and commerce has already begun to grow. After the construction of Padma Bridge, the tourism system will also change drastically,” he added.
