Coronavirus is ‘weakening’, now claims US doctors

Amidst the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, the good news was once again given by Dr. Donald Yealy, chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) in the United States. He explained the virus is turning to “weak” in line with the claims of Italian doctors.

He made the remarks at a press conference on Thursday, saying “a small number of people tested positive for coronavirus at UPMC. However, their condition does not seem bad. Which was deadly a few days ago.”

He added that “perhaps the virus is changing.” It is understandable that some features of the virus have been reducing. Because in the last few weeks, there has been very little need to take patients on ventilators in hospitals. Earlier, more than 500 coronavirus patients have been successfully treated at UPMC in the last three months.

Dr. Donald Yealy said less than four percent of all tests at the center and only 0.2 percent of asymptomatic patients tested positive. “This means that the presence of the virus in the community is now very low,” he added.

Earlier, Italian doctors made similar claims. They said the analysis showed signs of weakening the coronavirus. This was shown in the analysis of samples taken from patients infected with COVID-19 in Italy in March and April and samples taken from current victims, they claimed.

Alberto Zangrillo, head professor of the ICU at San Rafael Hospital in the Lombardy region, which has become the center of the COVID-19 in Italy, said in an interview on Sunday that the coronavirus has weakened in Italy. “The prevalence of the infection has also decreased. However, clinically it is not yet time to say that there is no virus in this area.”

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) has rejected the claim of Italian doctors. The organization’s epidemiologist Maria Van Karkhov said the virus had not changed in terms of infection. “There was no change in its intensity either,” she added.
