Workers can’t be laid off before Eid

Workers can’t be laid off before Eid

The Ministry of Labour and Employment has made it clear that no workers, including garment workers, can be laid off before Eid-ul-Fitr.
This information has been revealed from the meeting held on May 4 under the chairmanship of State Minister for Labour Begum Mannujan Sufian.

The proceedings signed by the Deputy Secretary of the Ministry Shaheen Akhtar on Sunday said that the following decision was taken in a meeting chaired by State Minister for Labour Begum Mannujan Sufian on May 4 for the information of all concerned.

The decisions are- The employer will not announce any layoffs before Eid-ul-Fitr. Workers who worked a full month last April will receive a full month's salary. Those who did not work will get 65 per cent of the total salary and allowance.

The workers will receive 65 per cent salary for the month of April who did not work. Those who worked will get full month's salary-allowance.

Earlier on April 28, a tripartite meeting of owners, workers and the ministry decided to pay 60 per cent salary of workers of shut RMG factories for April, instead of the full amount. The decision to pay five per cent more was taken on the demand of some workers’ organisations. This five per cent will be paid to workers with the salary of May as the final account for April’s salary is already done.

The next decision will be taken by re-convening the meeting by May 15.
