Bangladesh coronavirus cases surge to 44

Confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus in Bangladesh rose to 44 as the country on Thursday recorded five more infections. 

And four more patients recovered from the deadly virus, taking the total recovery to 11.

The Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control And Research (IEDCR) director Prof Meerjady Sabrina Flora made the disclosure today through online live briefing. 

"Samples of 126 more people were tested in last 24 hours and among them five tested positive for oronavirus," Flora said.

Flora also said one of the new affected people came from abroad, three were infected with the virus after coming in a contact with already infected, and efforts on to collecy informaton about the rest one.  

All the fresh patients are male, and ages of two are between 30-40, two in their 41-50s and one sexagenarian, the IEDCR official said, adding that no new deaths were reported.

Five people, so far, died from COVID-19 since Bangladesh reported its first cases of the epidemic on March 8.

Gradually rise of the coronavirus cases in Bangladesh prompted the government to announce 10-day general holiay from March 26 to April 4, close all government and private offices and business establishments during the period, shut all educational institutions, put some areas on lockdown, shut down all bars, and impose restrictions on all kinds of political, social, cultural and religious gatherings in an effort to stem the spread of the virus. 

The new coronavirus pandemic, first emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December last year, kept spreading to newer countries.

The deadly virus spread to at least 198 countries and territories, killing some 21,297 people globally, according to Worldometer, a website which compiles number of new coronavirus cases and deaths from it.

As many as 471,802 people worldwide caught the virus. Among them, 114,703 people recovered from the virus, the website said.
