Indian technology company Wipro is wrapping up its business in Bangladesh

Indian technology company Wipro is wrapping up its business in Bangladesh

During the tenure of the previous government, there was absolute dominance of Indian companies in any sector. This is no exception in the telecommunication industry. One of the country's leading mobile operator’s entire network managed service operations is being managed by the Indian Information technology-based company Wipro, who is doing end to end planning & dimensioning, nationwide rollout, various system integration & deployment as well as entire operation and maintenance measuring countries leading and largest networks. Indian technology firm Wipro is winding down business from Bangladesh as declared recently. In this context - many Bangladeshi employees working in the company confirmed matter of the business closure narrative. Shahriar Tushar, chief human resource officer of the organization, was contacted and told prominent news agency Dhaka Post, "I cannot say anything about winding up the business." Pls contact the management in the organization. An official, who did not want to be named, said that after the consistent nature engineering activities and various critical work done by regular Bangladeshi skilled workers was handed over to a foreign company, the employment rate of the youth in this industry naturally tapered in the country in a greater scale, impacting countries economy and employment sector grossly, especially engineering and technology segment.

After Wipro took over, they initially hired dozens of Indian workers, mostly freshers leaving youth possesses multiple skill sets of different levels of our native Bangladeshi deprived immensely. After foreign workers start working, they are naturally given access to various telecommunications systems for work purposes. This work was done ignoring the objections of the native workers on multiple occasions. The network and data security of organizations serving many customers in the country became vulnerable. He also said that Wipro had been depriving the Bangladeshi workers of their due statutory increments and regulated bonuses by exercising their power so far. They were repeatedly asked to ensure the benefits of the workers as per the labor law of Bangladesh, but they did not heed it. On the contrary, with the change of power, the telecom operator announced the cancellation of the contract with Wipro IT Bangladesh and the same officials entered a new network management service contract with another top company in the ICT sector, eventually this organization has looted as well in numerous means, used by the previous government.

With this tripartite alliance, Wipro got the opportunity to wrap up their business from Bangladesh. They send termination notices to all existing Bangladeshi network management service provider employees. In this situation, the employees brought forward the issue of long-term career and global opportunities as promised to them previously, but the HR department did not pay attention to it at all. Although the workers objected to this notice of sudden dismissal of about one and a half hundred workers, nothing was done and/or acted till date. Although the workers demanded separation compensation positively and utmost professionally, but they said that they will not take any responsibility in this regard.

The workers said that Wipro's Indian management was sitting remotely mostly in India than managing the Bangladeshi business. As a result, the workers do not even get face-to-face contact for months. When news broadcast representative went to Wipro's office in Gulshan to talk, s/he found that no one was there to exchange information. According to the security guard no one from the management comes here.

The rightful move by the new promising and intellect government of Bangladesh and aspiring youth generation, which took over through the anti-discrimination movement at all levels to create an absolute new stirring national, so to wind down Wipro's business in Bangladesh needs to be investigated deeply henceforth set the next course of action positively to comply with local regulatory in addition employment law & practiced policies respectfully met. It needs to be thoroughly checked whether the business they have been running for so long was legitimate, whether they were involved in money laundering or not and whether important information was smuggled through telecom services in the country.

Along with this, government intervention is also needed to collect the fair dues of the workers for the previous years along with separation packages respecting country’s labor law and order condition meet amicable manner.
