India edge Australia

India beat Australia by 36 runs in their crucial World Cup encounter at Oval on Sunday. Australia made a slow start chasing 353 runs and they lost their first wicket when captain Aaron Finch got run out after scoring 36 off 35 deliveries.

His opening partner David Warner, who made a slow 56 off 84 balls, left with a run-rate pressure when he got out in 25th over. Steve Smith made 69 and Usman Khawaja made 42 but they consumed 70 and 42 deliveries respectively and the asking run rate got even stepper.

It was too big an ask, and Alex Carey's unbeaten 55 off 35 balls could just reduce the margin of defeat.

Earlier, after winning the toss Indian openers Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma made a brilliant  start. Rohit was picked up by Australian all-rounder Nathan Coulter-Nile for 57 after forming 127-run stand but Dhawan went on to score 117 off 109 balls.

Later in the innings, Virat Kohli's 82 off 77  helped India kept on and two cameos of Hardik Pandya's 47 off 27 and Mahendra Singh Dhoni's 27 off 14 propelled the score to 352 runs.

This was India's second game and the 14th One Day International (ODI) match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019.

The 1983 and 2011 world champions opted to go with the same side that beat South Africa comfortably in their opening encounter.

Australia, who scraped past the West Indies in their previous match, stuck with the same eleven as well. The five-time world champions had beaten Afghanistan in their opening game.
