Army chief Shafiuddin elected as BOA president

General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed, Chief of Army Staff of Bangladesh Army, has been elected as the president of Bangladesh Olympic Association for the next four years. 

Syed Shahed Reza, who has been the secretary general for BOA over the last two terms, was also elected as the secretary general for the third consecutive time.

According to the election schedule, a Reza-led panel submitted their nomination papers on December 9.

As none of them withdrew their nomination till December 17, the last day for withdrawal, hence the bureau of the returning officer of the election last Saturday, declared the final list of the members. 

The bureau also confirmed as a result no election will be held Wednesday, according to the previous schedule.

The secretary general was very hopeful on the future of the new committee. 

“The committee is good. Some changes were made. New faces are introduced. Change is eternal. We want to move forward with everyone,” said Reza.

The committee got fresh faces in top positions as well.

Bangladesh Football Federation and Abahani Limited’s director in charge Kazi Nabil Ahmed MP became one of the new vice-presidents of the committee. 

“I am feeling very well. There are huge scopes to work here. I hope every one of us will work together to develop the sports. We will try to earn more medals in various games. We have to work together with various federations to achieve the success,” said Nabil Tuesday. 

Lt. General Mainul Islam, the president of archery federation, became another vice-president of the committee.


Sheikh Bashir Ahmed, Anjan Chowdhury and Mahbub Ara Gini MP, other vice-presidents of last three committees were also elected. 

Bangladesh Shooting Sport Federation’s general secretary Intekhabul Hamid is included in the committee for the first time as deputy general secretary.

Ashikur Rahman Miku and Najib Ahmed are also in the committee as deputy general secretary. 

Miku, the general secretary of volleyball federation expressed content after being elected for the third consecutive time. 

“I have been elected for the third time. I am very pleased. My target is to bring good results in sports. We will hoist the red-green flag home and abroad. For that we have to work hard,” said Miku.
