Law Ministry gives opinion on Khaleda Zia`s release request

The family had applied to the Home Ministry seeking release of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia for better treatment. The law ministry has given its opinion on that application. In the meantime, that opinion has been sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Law Minister Anisul Haque confirmed the information to media on Tuesday. However, it was not immediately known what was the law ministry's opinion.

Earlier, a letter was sent to the home ministry last week asking for Khaleda Zia's release, saying she would be taken out of the country for better treatment. Khaleda Zia's younger brother Shamim Eskander made the application to the Home Minister.

Khaleda Zia has been in jail since February 2018 after being convicted in Zia Orphanage Trust and Zia Charitable Trust corruption cases. On March 25 last year, the government through an executive order released her for six months on conditions that she will stay at her home in the capital and not leave the country. Her sentence was later extended for another six months in September last year. Khaleda Zia was awarded 17 years jail in Zia Orphanage Trust and Zia Charitable Trust corruption cases.

In the third phase on March 15 this year, the suspension was extended for another six months. The third phase moratorium is set to expire on September 24. Earlier, her family requested the Home Minister to release Khaleda Zia. After receiving the opinion of the law ministry, the home ministry will now decide on the matter.
